About this biomarker
Creatinine is made from normal muscle metabolism and is removed by the kidneys. Blood creatinine is commonly used to estimate kidney function.
Why it matters
It is a core marker in kidney assessment and is used to calculate eGFR.
What lower levels may suggest
Low creatinine may be seen with lower muscle mass or pregnancy and is usually less concerning than high values.
What higher levels may suggest
High creatinine may suggest reduced kidney filtration, though muscle mass and other factors also affect it.
Common tests
Comprehensive metabolic panel, basic metabolic panel, serum creatinine, kidney function panel
