About this biomarker
Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is a lipoprotein particle whose level is influenced strongly by genetics. It is usually measured separately from a standard lipid panel.
Why it matters
It can help explain cardiovascular risk that is not fully captured by standard cholesterol markers.
What lower levels may suggest
Low Lp(a) generally suggests less inherited risk from this marker.
What higher levels may suggest
High Lp(a) is associated with increased cardiovascular risk and can run in families.
Common tests
Lipoprotein(a) blood test, advanced lipid panel
