About this biomarker
Serum iron measures the amount of iron bound mainly to transferrin in the blood at the time of testing. It can change during the day and is usually interpreted with other iron studies.
Why it matters
It helps assess iron status when read with ferritin, TIBC, and transferrin saturation.
What lower levels may suggest
Low serum iron may be seen with iron deficiency, inflammation, infection, or chronic disease.
What higher levels may suggest
High serum iron may be seen with iron overload, supplement use, hemolysis, or liver disorders.

Iron studies, serum iron, anemia panel
