About this biomarker
Creatine kinase, or CK, is found mainly in skeletal muscle, heart muscle, and the brain. Blood CK rises when muscle cells are damaged.
Why it matters
It helps assess muscle injury, strenuous exercise effects, and certain medication-related muscle problems.
What lower levels may suggest
Low CK is usually not clinically meaningful on its own.
What higher levels may suggest
High CK may be seen with muscle injury, intense exercise, inflammation, seizures, or medication effects.
Common tests
Creatine kinase, CK total, muscle injury workup
