About this biomarker

GGT, or gamma-glutamyl transferase, is an enzyme found in the liver and bile ducts. It is commonly used with ALP to support whether a result is more likely liver-related.

Why it matters

It helps add context when liver enzymes are abnormal.

What lower levels may suggest

Low GGT is usually not clinically meaningful on its own.

What higher levels may suggest

High GGT may be seen with alcohol use, bile duct disease, fatty liver, medication effects, or other liver conditions.

Common tests

Liver enzyme testing, hepatic function panel, GGT test
