About this biomarker

Bilirubin is produced when old red blood cells are broken down. The liver processes bilirubin so it can be removed from the body.

Why it matters

It helps assess liver function, bile flow, and certain blood-related conditions.

What lower levels may suggest

Low bilirubin is usually not clinically meaningful on its own.

What higher levels may suggest

High bilirubin may be seen with liver disease, bile duct blockage, increased red blood cell breakdown, or inherited bilirubin-processing differences.

Common tests

Comprehensive metabolic panel, hepatic function panel, bilirubin fractionation
