About this biomarker
Uric acid is produced during the breakdown of purines from body tissues and food. The kidneys remove most of it from the body.
Why it matters
It is commonly used in gout assessment and can also reflect kidney handling and metabolic patterns.
What lower levels may suggest
Low uric acid is less common and may be seen with certain medications or rare metabolic conditions.
What higher levels may suggest
High uric acid may be seen with gout, kidney dysfunction, cell turnover, dehydration, or metabolic syndrome.
Common tests
Serum uric acid, metabolic panels, gout evaluation
